Board Update - February 11, 2026 - Chance Jenkins

On Wednesday, February 11th, the board had the privilege to meet at Rifle High School. During the "Shine the Light" portion of the meeting, Principal Johnston shared with us some victories and ongoing challenges. Test scores continue to improve in certain areas. These should always be met with celebration. My focus has always been and will continue to be High Student Achievement for EVERY student. That's why we don't just celebrate our victories; we study the areas where we fall short. Make no mistake, this is a very important step in the process of getting better. We study, plan, and implement. Rifle High School continues to do this at a pace that I am extremely proud of.

While we are on the topic of achievement, it is important to understand that the term is very subjective. It looks different for every child and family. Some kids decide to enroll in university and then go on to become doctors and engineers. Others decide they want to pursue other education, and then there are those who enter the workforce. All of these options are great. With that in mind, our CTE programs at Rifle High School are second to none. These programs introduce kids to a variety of different fields. Introducing these subjects helps kids focus on what they find interesting and worth pursuing, and shows them what they DON'T want to be doing. Either way, this experience has proven to be one of the most effective tools Garfield Re-2 has in achieving our Graduate profile in the Strategic Plan. We will continue to meet kids where they are and teach from that point. Whether you are attending university or entering the workforce your experience during these formative years are just as important.

On Thursday night, I had the privilege to attend the Coal Ridge vs Rifle basketball game. The CRHS girls outlasted RHS, and the RHS boys edged out CRHS. At halftime of the boys' game, the totals for Make-A-Wish week were announced.  To say that I am proud of our community is an understatement.

Between the two high schools, over $15,000 was raised. This is a testament to our community. I am so thankful to live in a place that supports its schools and children. Businesses and families alike showed up to support this cause, and it was awesome to see.

Rifle High School came away with the bragging rights in money raised. Can't wait to see where this goes in the future. It was a great night capped off with an awesome basketball game. Both teams fought, both student bodies showed up and were loud, and everyone who could be there, was there, as it was standing room only. It's an awesome thing to be a part of a community that puts our children at the center of our lives. Thank you, everyone, for your support.
