From the Board, January 10, 2025 - Chance Jenkins

I hope everyone had a merry Christmas and a happy New Year! Students have returned from Christmas break refreshed and ready to tackle the second half of the school year. Let’s make it a great one!

Winter sports are in full swing, and we’re excited for the basketball and wrestling seasons ahead. A huge congratulations to the Coal Ridge Cheerleaders for stepping up into a higher division in the state classification and still dominating their way to the state title. Way to make us proud!

Last Wednesday, we had a great school board meeting, where we heard about the amazing work happening at Riverside Middle School. Their efforts to not only remain in the green for the School Performance Framework (SPF) but also continue to grow are truly commendable. Keep up the great work!

Thank you to everyone for your patience as we work through the implementation of the new cell phone policies. These policies are designed to create a learning environment free from distractions, and adjustments will be made as needed to find what works best for everyone. I encourage all parents to reflect on what life was like before the advent of smartphones. It is important to help our children unchain themselves from the crutch of technology and engage with the physical world around them. Encourage conversation, foster new friendships, and support problem-solving through face-to-face interactions.

Finally, a reminder to all parents: please stay connected with your child’s teachers. If any issues arise, don’t hesitate to reach out—communication is key to student success.

I also encourage everyone to participate in the governance of the Garfield Re-2 School District. Your voice matters, and your input is valued as we work together to shape the future of our schools. Thank you all for your understanding, your contributions, and your continued engagement. Let’s make the rest of this school year a success!

¡Espero que todos hayan tenido una feliz Navidad y un próspero Año Nuevo! Los estudiantes han regresado de las vacaciones de Navidad renovados y listos para afrontar la segunda mitad del año escolar. ¡Hagamos que sea un gran año!

Los deportes de invierno están en pleno apogeo y estamos entusiasmados por las temporadas de baloncesto y lucha libre que se avecinan. Una gran felicitación para las animadoras de Coal Ridge por ascender a una división superior en la clasificación estatal y seguir dominando su camino hacia el título estatal. ¡Qué orgullo!

El miércoles pasado, tuvimos una gran reunión de la junta escolar, donde nos enteramos del increíble trabajo que se está realizando en Riverside Middle School. Sus esfuerzos no solo para permanecer en verde en el Marco de desempeño escolar (SPF) sino también para seguir creciendo son verdaderamente encomiables. ¡Sigan con el gran trabajo!

Gracias a todos por su paciencia mientras trabajamos en la implementación de las nuevas políticas de teléfonos celulares. Estas políticas están diseñadas para crear un entorno de aprendizaje libre de distracciones y se realizarán los ajustes necesarios para encontrar lo que funcione mejor para todos. Animo a todos los padres a que reflexionen sobre cómo era la vida antes de la llegada de los teléfonos inteligentes. Es importante ayudar a nuestros hijos a liberarse de la muleta de la tecnología y a interactuar con el mundo físico que los rodea. Fomente la conversación, fomente nuevas amistades y apoye la resolución de problemas mediante interacciones cara a cara.

Por último, un recordatorio para todos los padres: manténganse en contacto con los maestros de sus hijos. Si surge algún problema, no duden en comunicarse: la comunicación es clave para el éxito de los estudiantes.

También animo a todos a participar en la gobernanza del Distrito Escolar Garfield Re-2. Su voz importa y su aporte es valioso a medida que trabajamos juntos para dar forma al futuro de nuestras escuelas.
