Cactus Valley Elementary Math Night Brings Learning to Life

The Rifle Wal-Mart was teeming with excitement on Thursday night as the Cactus Valley Cougars made their presence known.

Cougars could be spotted lurking in the cereal aisle, hiding among the barbecue sauce, and stalking the bakery goods - but these were not the dangerous wild cats one might expect. Instead, they were the enthusiastic students and families of Cactus Valley Elementary School.

This annual event, known as Cactus Valley Family Math Night, brought together classroom learning and real-world math skills in a fun and interactive way. Upon arrival, students and their families checked in and were given grade-level appropriate tasks to complete throughout the grocery section of the store.

Tasks ranged from budgeting to finding volume and area, identifying the weights of produce, and even spotting geometric shapes scattered throughout the store. The event was a great success, fostering a love for math and promoting practical applications of mathematical concepts in everyday life.

“Family Math Night helps us bring classroom learning to life for our students, showcases our student’s learning for their families and our community and creates great opportunities for community partnerships with companies like Wal-Mart,” said Cactus Valley Elementary principal Kelly Detlefsen.

Third grade teacher Toni Yorty said it was nice to be able to do events like Family Math Night again.

“It’s great to be able to partner with Walmart and get out into the public again. This is a nice opportunity for us to be out in the community and, and have our students show off their math skills.”

Fourth grader Payson Keranen scrambled around the store searching for the ingredients to make chocolate chip cookies. Her task was to record both the actual price of the items and a rounded price of the items and compare the two.

“It’s important to know how to round because if you only have a certain amount of money,  and you need to get all this stuff, you need to know if you can get it all,” she explained, and then sprinted off to find the chocolate chips to finish her task.

Third grader Olivia Moreno said she had fun using her math skills.

“I liked being able to do multiplication and to find different polygons around the store,” she said.
Ultimately, Principal Detlefsen was thrilled with the turn out and seeing families enjoy learning and math together.

“Our staff, and especially our academic coach Nikki Foreback, put so much energy into creating tonight, it is really wonderful to see so many kids and their families doing math together and have this event be such a success,” she smiled.

La noche de matemáticas de la escuela primaria Cactus Valley le da vida al aprendizaje

El Rifle Wal-Mart estaba lleno de emoción el jueves por la noche cuando los Cactus Valley Cougars dieron a conocer su presencia.

Se podían ver pumas acechando en el pasillo de cereales, escondiéndose entre la salsa barbacoa y acechando los productos de panadería, pero estos no eran los peligrosos gatos salvajes que cabría esperar. En cambio, eran los estudiantes y las familias entusiastas de la Escuela Primaria Cactus Valley.

Este evento anual, conocido como Noche Familiar de Matemáticas de Cactus Valley, reunió el aprendizaje en el salón de clases y las habilidades matemáticas del mundo real de una manera divertida e interactiva. A su llegada, los estudiantes y sus familias se registraron y se les dieron tareas apropiadas para su nivel de grado para completar en la sección de comestibles de la tienda.

Las tareas iban desde el presupuesto hasta encontrar el volumen y el área, identificar los pesos de los productos e incluso detectar formas geométricas dispersas por toda la tienda. El evento fue un gran éxito, fomentando el amor por las matemáticas y promoviendo aplicaciones prácticas de conceptos matemáticos en la vida cotidiana.

“Family Math Night nos ayuda a dar vida al aprendizaje en el aula para nuestros estudiantes, muestra el aprendizaje de nuestros estudiantes para sus familias y nuestra comunidad y crea grandes oportunidades para asociaciones comunitarias con compañías como Wal-Mart”, dijo Kelly Detlefsen, directora de la escuela primaria Cactus Valley.

El maestro de tercer grado, Toni Yorty, dijo que era bueno poder hacer eventos como la Noche Familiar de Matemáticas nuevamente.

“Es genial poder asociarme con Walmart y salir al público nuevamente. Esta es una buena oportunidad para nosotros de estar en la comunidad y hacer que nuestros estudiantes demuestren sus habilidades matemáticas”.

Payson Keranen, estudiante de cuarto grado, se apresuró por la tienda en busca de los ingredientes para hacer galletas con chispas de chocolate. Su tarea consistía en registrar tanto el precio real de los artículos como el precio redondeado de los artículos y compararlos.

“Es importante saber cómo redondear porque si solo tienes una cierta cantidad de dinero y necesitas obtener todas estas cosas, debes saber si puedes obtenerlo todo”, explicó, y luego corrió para encontrar el chispas de chocolate para terminar su tarea.

La alumna de tercer grado Olivia Moreno dijo que se divirtió usando sus habilidades matemáticas.

“Me gustó poder hacer multiplicaciones y encontrar diferentes polígonos alrededor de la tienda”, dijo.

En última instancia, el director Detlefsen estaba encantado con la participación y ver a las familias disfrutar juntas del aprendizaje y las matemáticas.

“Nuestro personal, y especialmente nuestra entrenadora académica Nikki Foreback, puso tanta energía en crear esta noche, es realmente maravilloso ver a tantos niños y sus familias haciendo matemáticas juntos y que este evento sea un éxito”, sonrió.
