CRHS raises $1,000 for Rally the Valley

Sometimes small actions can lead to big reactions.

Emma Morgan and the Coal Ridge High School National Honor Society took a small challenge from Katie Ledall from the Valley View Hospital Foundation and turned it into a donation of over $1,000. The money will support services for cancer patients at the Calloway-Young Cancer Center.

Emma has a deep relationship with cancer.

When Emma was just nine-years-old, she lost her dad to melanoma.

“He had a long five year battle with cancer,” said Emma, now a senior at Coal Ridge. “That just impacted me a lot as a kid, growing up and seeing him go through all of that, but I know how much the treatments helped him.”

Emma volunteers at the cancer center and when asked to lead the fundraising efforts for her school, she didn’t hesitate.

“This was just a perfect opportunity to give back to the community that helped my dad,” she explained.
Emma and Coal Ridge teacher and National Honor Society sponsor Bobbi Jo Wiescamp pitched the idea to the rest of the National Honor Society members, and they were eager to support the cause.

Beginning last year with bake sales at track meets, breakfast burrito sales at golf tournaments and half time field goal competitions at football games, the Coal Ridge NHS presented a $1,000 check (and a little extra cash) to Shirley and Eric Williams to donate to the Rally the Valley event in Glenwood on September 10.

Emma is interested in pursuing a career in medicine, just as her older brother and sister are, and is grateful for the generosity of the community to support the Rally the Valley cause.

“We were really surprised by how successful our fundraising efforts were.”
