Garfield Re-2 Launches Full-Time Online Pathway for Students

Garfield Re-2 is building new support systems for students and families with the launch of a Full-Time Online Program this fall. Designed for high school students and families who need greater flexibility, the program provides an alternative pathway to graduation while keeping students connected to their home schools.

“We’re not creating a standalone school, but an alternate pathway to graduation for kids who desire to take a full-time course load online,” said Jacob Pingel, Director of Curriculum and Instruction.

Students remain enrolled at Rifle High School or Coal Ridge High School and complete coursework through Colorado Digital Learning Solutions (CDLS). The program offers more than 150 courses, all developed and taught by licensed Colorado teachers. Students receive timely, subject-specific feedback and benefit from online mentors based at the One Door Family Resource Center, who hold weekly check-ins with students and support family needs.

Admission to the program is not automatic. Each student must undergo a rigorous review process with Mr. Pingel before being accepted.

“We want to make sure that the students who enter this program are set up for success,” Pingel explained. “The coursework is available on demand, so you are able to work on your coursework anytime, day or night, seven days a week, from any location, as long as you have an internet connection,” he said.

Pingel emphasized that the location at One Door is more than symbolic.

“Oftentimes there are family dynamics that impede a child’s ability to work on or access coursework. Having One Door as the first line of support means we can help families with resources they need for their child to be successful.”

The online pathway will begin with approximately 10 students in the fall semester and is expected to expand in numbers, and extend to the middle and elementary school levels in the future.

“This is also an attractive option for families who place a high value on work,” Pingel added. “It provides the flexibility for students to maintain a job and still succeed in school.”
