Garfield Re-2 students stay on track as graduation rises and dropout remains low

As Colorado reaches its highest graduation rate in more than a decade and a record-low dropout rate, Garfield Re-2 School District is seeing similarly strong results for students, according to the most recent data released by the Colorado Department of Education.

Statewide, Colorado’s four-year graduation rate increased to 85.6%, while the dropout rate fell to 1.6%, the lowest in state history. Garfield Re-2’s outcomes stand out particularly when compared to neighboring districts in the valley.

Graduation rates rising in Garfield Re-2

Garfield Re-2’s four-year graduation rate climbed to 87.7%, an increase of more than two percentage points from last year. The district’s seven-year completion rate reached 89.0%, reflecting strong systems that support students who may need additional time or flexibility to complete high school.

These rates place Garfield Re-2 ahead of its neighboring districts and above the current statewide average.

“Graduation represents the foundation our students are building for what comes next,” said Superintendent Kirk Banghart. “Higher graduation and completion rates show our schools and staff are meeting students where they are and supporting them through every step. These results reflect the collective work of our students, families, and staff to ensure graduates are prepared for life beyond high school.”

In addition to rising graduation rates, Garfield Re-2 continues to post low dropout rates, with a districtwide rate of approximately 1%, below the state average. Dropout rates remain low across student groups, including economically disadvantaged students, multilingual learners, and students with disabilities.

“These results reflect the intentional work happening in our schools to keep students connected,” Banghart said. “When students feel known, supported, and see purpose in their learning, they’re far more likely to stay engaged and graduate.”

Engaging students through pathways, programs, and outdoor learning

Superintendent Banghart pointed to expanded opportunities for high school engagement as a key factor in keeping students on track to graduation and aligned with the district’s Graduate Profile. Garfield Re-2 offers multiple pathways designed to meet students’ interests, strengths, and postsecondary goals, including an online high school program and current or expanding career pathways in automotive technology, agriculture, outdoor recreation, health sciences, engineering, and business and marketing.

Students also have access to a wide range of outdoor learning experiences and extracurricular opportunities that help them build confidence, resilience, and strong relationships, key traits of a Garfield Re-2 graduate. Opportunities such as climbing clubs, ski and snowboarding clubs, and the Buddy Program help students connect with peers, develop leadership skills, and feel a strong sense of belonging within their school community.

“Our commitment to students remains constant,” Banghart said. “Garfield Re-2 graduates are resilient, capable, and connected to their community, and these results show we’re moving in the right direction.”

Colorado school districts report graduation, dropout, and mobility data annually through the Colorado Department of Education. These indicators help districts evaluate progress and plan supports to ensure student success.
