Heading into the new year with momentum as a Garfield Re-2 Community
As we turn the corner into a new year, there is a continued and steady sense of momentum across Garfield Re-2. It grows from the combination of our long-standing traditions, the stability of our shared values, and the fresh perspectives that keep us moving forward. The upcoming winter break offers all of us a welcome moment to pause, reflect, and return renewed for the work ahead.
At our December Board of Education meeting, we swore in two new Board members, Steve Beaulieu and Megan Heil, who join returning members Fathom Jensen, Cassie Haskell, and Chance Jenkins in the important work of guiding our district. Last week, our team attended the Colorado Association of School Boards Conference to learn, listen, and grow together as a newly formed board. There is real power in bringing together seasoned leaders who understand the "why" behind our work with new voices who bring energy, curiosity, and ideas. Strong governance grows from experience that honors our history and from innovation that helps us improve.
Across the district, I continue to see that same spirit reflected in our classrooms each day. Our educators challenge students across a wide spectrum of needs and aspirations. Some students are pushing themselves in our most advanced courses, including AP, IB, and Dual Enrollment opportunities. Others rely on strong support to reach their greatest potential. No matter where a student begins, they are encouraged, challenged, and surrounded by adults who believe in them. This is happening in every building, every day, and it is one of the greatest strengths of Garfield Re-2.
As we enter the holiday season, the heart and generosity of our community shine even brighter.
Our Rifle High School and Coal Ridge High School marching bands joined together for the Hometown Holidays celebration and filled the streets with one unified and joyful sound during the District’s Polar Express experience. Thank you to HR Director Devon Spaulding, our Transportation Department, our band directors, and everyone who helped create this magical event for our community.
Rifle Middle School completed another successful food drive, collecting nearly 1,800 items for Lift-UP. This annual effort, led by the RMS PALS program, reflects the leadership and community connectedness that we are proud to nurture in our students.
Wamsley Elementary students brought their creativity and kindness to the forefront by crafting wreaths for residents at the Rifle Senior Center. Students gathered and prepared the bows themselves, and each wreath was as unique as the child who created it. These moments reflect the strong, determined, and community-centered leaders who grow in our schools.
I also want to recognize our Nutrition Services team, who served 4,589 Thanksgiving meals the week before break. More than 1,600 of those meals were shared with adults, including family members and trusted adults who took the time to enjoy a meaningful moment with their students. We are grateful for every staff member and volunteer who contributed to this special tradition.
Winter has officially arrived in Garfield County. I want to express my appreciation to our Transportation Department, who navigated the first snow and icy roads with steady professionalism. Their commitment to student safety continues to set the standard for excellence.
As we look toward the new year, I am encouraged by the strength, generosity, and resilience of our community. New beginnings, strong traditions, and a shared commitment to our children are the forces that will continue to guide our momentum. I am grateful for every person who helps make Garfield Re-2 a place where students thrive and where hope continues to grow.
Let us keep building forward together.
