The Garfield Re-2 School District would like to thank everyone who participated in the previous Social Studies Standards survey. As you may know, the settings on the original survey were relaxed allowing for the greatest ease of use of the survey. This, however, led to additional concerns, including people being able to take the survey multiple times, and people outside of Garfield Re-2 taking the survey.

When Garfield Re-2 students picked up their school lunch trays on Tuesday, they all got to enjoy an ear of locally grown Olathe Sweet Corn from Okagawa Farms in Grand Junction. The added treat was met with smiles and eager gnawing at the warm, yellow delight. “It’s so good,” said one Graham Mesa Elementary kindergartener. “It’s sweet and yummy.”

Garfield Re-2 launches Social Studies Standard community forums

Garfield Re-2 would like all Garfield Re-2 residents to share their VOICE in the CHOICE of Social Studies Standards. At the August 23, 2023 School Board meeting, the Garfield Re-2 Board of Directors approved a community engagement plan to gather feedback about potential social studies standards. The District is in the process of evaluating which Social Studies standards will help Garfield Re-2 students grow into the best-informed citizens they can be with a comprehensive understanding of the world.

Garfield Re-2 School District Approves 2023-24 Budget
07/13/2023
The Garfield School District No. Re-2 Board of Education approved the 2023-24 budget on June 28 with a total budget appropriation of just over $92 million. Of the district’s six (6) funds, the General Fund and the Capital Projects Fund are the two largest funds with appropriations of $65 million and $14 million, respectively.

Garfield Re-2 School District enters into performance contract with Johnson Controls to improve the learning environment

The Garfield Re-2 School Board took action at the May 24, 2023 regular meeting to improve the school facilities for students, staff and community. Garfield Re-2 entered into a performance contract with Johnson Controls that allows the District to upgrade their school buildings without spending extra money. Johnson Controls will help the District save money through energy, water and operational savings and help fund a variety of health, safety, lighting and HVAC upgrades across the District. Additionally, Wamsley Elementary will receive major renovations.

Did you know, that local property taxes in the Garfield Re-2 School district account for just 10% of the general operating budget of the district? The remaining 90% is “backfilled” by the State of Colorado. This imbalance comes in large part from a decades-long misinterpretation of tax laws. In order to make the local and state contributions more balanced, the required fix means that property taxpayers in the Garfield Re-2 School district will see their property taxes increase gradually for the next 12-years.

International Baccalaureate students aim to return Fravert Reservoir to its former glory
The Fravert Reservoir is both a special place and a neglected place. While it’s a popular spot for the community to go running, shooting and birdwatching, it’s also a spot that’s been subjected to littering and illegal dumping. Bearing witness to this combination of appreciation and abuse during their time at Rifle High School, seniors Jocelyn Abbott, Karisa Coombs, Katelyn Mentink, and Lily McCann-Klausz have taken it upon themselves to help reconcile the disconnect.

Joseph Thompson Earns Daniels Scholarship
Doors have opened for Joseph Thompson. “It really does just give me lots of options school wise,” he said of receiving the Daniels Scholarship. “I thought that was really awesome, that I can kind of make a decision based solely on where I want to go, instead of how much it costs to where I want to go.”

Class pets teach kids lessons for a lifetime
Both students and teachers alike are grateful to attend school in-person during the pandemic, but having a plethora of pets in the halls makes it even better. Thanks to the school’s experiential education program, students at Wamsley are learning to care for a variety of animals including a turtle, frogs, geckos, hermit crabs, millipedes and some huge cockroaches. Yes, they are in fact giant hissing cockroaches from Texas.
