RIFLE - At the Thursday, March 19, 2020 Special School Board Meeting, the Garfield Re-2 School Board officially named Interim Superintendent Heather Grumley as the only finalist for the Superintendent position.
The Board, in conjunction with two interview committees consisting of parents, staff, teachers and administrators, conducted interviews with Park County School District Superintendent Wendy Wyman and Aspen School District Interim Superintendent Tom Heald. Howard-Suamico School District in Green Bay, WI Asst. Superintendent Matthew Spets had withdrawn his name for personal reasons.
“We interviewed two highly qualified candidates today. They are exceptional instructional leaders, human beings, and educators. We liked both and care about both candidates, however at end of the day, we did not find a good fit with our existing staff,” explained School Board President Anne Guettler.
As part of the discussion, the Board said that since the departure of Brent Curtice, Mrs. Grumley has met every challenge and showed great growth while dealing with relentless daily trials. The Board recognized that the change in direction is surprising, however they are confident in their direction.
“Our job is to do what is in the best interest in the district. We know with everything that we are, that she is the right leader for us at the right time,” added Guettler.
Grumley had not applied for the position initially, but the Board felt that the dramatically changing landscape became an impromptu job interview during the last several weeks.
“I’m extremely honored and humbled by the trust and faith that the Garfield Re-2 School Board has in me,” explained Mrs. Grumley of her new position. “I have worked with great principals, administrators, teachers, and staff members that have taught me so much about leadership. I am excited to take on this new challenge and help the district that has raised me as an educator reach even higher levels.”
By law, the Board must announce a finalist for 14 days to allow for negotiations and community input. These opportunities will be virtual. Dates of meetings will come soon. Formal action on the Superintendent position will take place at the April 14 School Board meeting.
