RIFLE -  Out of an abundance of caution, the Garfield Re-2 School District, Wamsley Elementary and Rifle MIddle School administration have transitioned Wamsley Elementary and Rifle Middle Schools to 100% online learning effective Monday, November 16 through November 19. School will resume with in-person instruction on Monday, November 30.

Garfield Re-2 School District was informed by the Garfield County Department of Public Health of individual(s) that are confirmed to have COVID-19, or who have COVID-19 like symptoms or illness within Wamsley and Rifle Middle School.

At Wamsley Elementary School:

  • 27% of the teaching staff is out of the building due to quarantine, isolation or having their own small children out on quarantine.

  • Wamsley Elementary currently has 14% of its students out on quarantine.

  • Garfield Re-2 is experiencing a critical substitute teacher shortage that eliminates our capacity to deliver instruction and keep your children safe.

At Rifle Middle School:

  • 199 of Rifle Middle School students (32 %) have been quarantined

  • 18 staff members have been quarantined.

  • Garfield Re-2 is experiencing a critical substitute teacher shortage that eliminates our capacity to deliver instruction and keep your children safe.

“We have been doing everything in our power to keep our students and staff safe, healthy and learning in-person to the greatest extent possible,” said Garfield Re-2 Superintendent, Heather Grumley. “Some of our schools have reached their capacity to meet the needs of our students for in-person instruction, others are rapidly approaching their limits. The exponentially increasing number of COVID cases in Garfield County is dramatically impacting our capacity to keep kids learning in-person safely. We are imploring our community to be safe, 6-feet apart, wear your masks and wash your hands regularly throughout the day - for your health, for your children’s health and to keep our schools open.”

Garfield Re-2 facilities and custodial crews will use the time to complete a deep-clean and disinfect the schools, so they are ready for school on November 30. Both Rifle Middle and Wamsley Elementary will be offering a drive-through meal pick up option. Families can contact their schools directly: Wamsley Elementary 665-7950 and Rifle Middle School 665-7900 by 9 a.m.daily if they would like to pick meals. Drive-through meals will be available from 11a.m. - 12 p.m.

As part of the Public Health investigations:

  • The individuals diagnosed are being asked to isolate until they are no longer infectious.

  • The individual’s activities when they could have spread COVID-19 have been assessed.

  • The people who were close contacts of the person with COVID-19 have been instructed to stay home from school for 14 days after the exposure. This means they should not go to school, playdates, sports, church or extracurricular events for the full 14-day period.

  • Parents/caregivers of a child in quarantine are considered ‘contacts of a contact’ and are not required to quarantine. However, parents need to continue to monitor their family’s symptoms.
