Garfield Re-2 School Board declares vacancy; Begins process for District C appointment

RIFLE – At the October 15, 2021 special meeting of the Garfield Re-2 School District, the Board of Directors officially declared a vacancy in Director District C and determined a process to fill the vacancy. This vacancy occurred when Katie Mackley stepped down effective immediately at the October 13, 2021 regular school board meeting.

“It is with deep sadness and disillusionment that I submit my resignation from the Garfield Re-2 school board, effective immediately,” wrote Mackley in her resignation letter. “I ran for the school board with the desire to cultivate innovation and achievement for our district, work toward equitable outcomes for all students and foster a culture of communication and transparency within the district and the community. It has become apparent that my goals for the district are no longer in alignment with those of the community.”

Mackley was elected in November 2019 and ran unopposed. Mackley was appointed as the Vice President during the reorganization meeting in 2019.

After declaring the vacancy, the Board determined that letters of intent for District C candidates shall be due by 5 p.m. Monday, October 25, 2021.  The board will review the applications at their regular meeting on October 27 to determine which candidates will move to the interview process.  The Board will interview candidates on Monday, November 1, 2021 at 6 p.m.

“We know this is a very important decision for the School Board to make. We want to ensure the continuity of the Board, and all decisions will be made with the best interest of the District as a whole at heart,” explained board president Anne Guettler. “To ensure the work of Garfield Re-2 is uninterrupted, the existing board will treat Mrs. Mackley’s resignation like any other and start the process immediately.”

Guettler added that she is hopeful that the board will have a number of qualified applicants to submit letters of intent and that naming a successor to Mrs. Mackley’s seat quickly will facilitate the transition of the new board members, especially in light of the upcoming work with the Colorado Association of School Boards (CASB) in December.

“We want the new board to begin their work collectively. To stagger the onboarding process of new board members would be a disservice to the organization,” she added.

Per Board Policy, the vacancy must be filled within 60 days. People interested in filling the vacancy must live within the boundaries of Director District C, be a registered voter as shown on the books of the county clerk and recorder, for at least 12 consecutive months before the appointment, be 18 years or older, and be a citizen of the United States. In general, Director District C includes the City of Rifle east of Whiteriver Ave and south of Morrow Drive, and extends to Cottonwood Park outside of the city limits. and the south west portion of the school district south of the Colorado River to Mamm Creek. The appointee to the District C seat must face election in the November 2023 election.

Those interested in submitting a letter of intent should mail it to or drop it off at the district office at 839 Whiteriver Avenue in Rifle no later than 5 p.m. on Monday, October 25, 2021. Please contact Sharon Donohue at 970-665-7600 if you need help determining what district you are qualified to run in.
