Meriya Stickler was School Board President from 2021-2022. She resigned in August 2022.
In honor of National School Board Appreciation month, Garfield Re-2 is publishing a series of Q&A profile pieces on each member of our Board of Education. In a new year and with a newly elected Board, we hope that readers will learn something new about the outstanding people who represent and serve our district community.
1. What is your position on the Board? What district do you represent? When did your appointment begin, and when does it end?
M.S.: I am the President and I represent District D. My appointment began in 2019 and will end in 2023.
2. Can you tell me about your history in Garfield Re-2? (Ex. How long have you lived here? Do you have kids that go to school in the district? Are you married to an employee?)
M.S.: I am a Colorado native and moved to Garfield County about 25 years ago. I have two boys: one who is a junior at Coal Ridge High School and one who graduated from CRHS and is a 2nd year engineering student in college.
3. Why did you want to join the Board, and what are the duties of your current role?
M.S.: I joined the School Board to give back to the community. As President, I act as a spokesperson for the School Board in the interim between meetings. I facilitate and protect board processes and ensure the Board of Directors have opportunities for professional development.
4. What were your motivations for serving on the Garfield Re-2 Board of Education?
M.S.: My motivation is to serve the children and staff in Garfield RE2!
5. Who are your role models in terms of leadership and service?
M.S.: I would choose Garfield Re-2 staff as my role models for leadership and service! The Re-2 staff has mastered the art of motivating each other to act toward achieving the goal to keep kids in school no matter what for the last two years!
6. Do you have a favorite book, film or quote about education or leadership?
M.S.: My favorite movie is “Unbroken.” This movie exhibits great strength and perseverance, and it shows what it's like to be a leader by never giving up.
7. Did you have a teacher or an educator that made an impact on your life? If so, please tell us about them.
M.S.: Ms. Nash would have to rank at the top of my list. When I graduated, I was not completely resolved to starting college immediately. Ms. Nash took it upon herself to go to college tryouts with me that ended in a full ride scholarship. Needless to say, I started college immediately following high school and am forever grateful for her dedication to me.
