Tom SlappeyWith the retirement of Shirley Parks from the Garfield Re-2 School Board in February, a vacancy was left in Director District A.

Three citizens from Director District A submitted letters of interest for the vacant seat. At the April 4, 2019 School Board meeting, Tom Slappey was appointed to the seat to fill the remainder of Dir. Parks’ term. His first full meeting was April 23.

“I decided to run for the school board because I have two kids in the Re-2 School district and in my mind, I have a vested interest in how things are done in the district.” he explained. “I also believe that I have a unique position based on my experience in industry to bring a different perspective to the board. I believe I can represent the members of our community to bring the concerns they have to the board in a respectful manner.”

Slappey owns several businesses in Rifle and the surrounding communities and is the Senior Account Manager for Ryerson Inc., a Chicago bases metals distribution company. Though his work takes him out of town quite a bit, he is committed to filling this important role.

“I am all about the kids, I want to make sure they have the most awesome and beneficial education experience that we can offer,” he added.

Outside of work, Mr. Slappey is a certified NRA Firearms Range Safety Officer and a certified Shotgun Instructor. He coaches youth shooting sports for Garfield County 4H and teaches students 10 - 19 years old in the shotgun disciplines of Trap/Skeet/Sporting Clays. He has also coached baseball for the Colorado River Valley Little League for the last five-years.

“Baseball is my favorite sport and I have fond memories playing as a kid myself,” he reminisced. “I enjoy spending time with the kids and teaching them what I have learned over the years as a student of the game.”

Overall, Mr. Slappey is interested in learning more about how the operations of a school district work including a focus on the budget and teacher recruitment and retention.

“At this point I hope to focus on the budget, and make sure that we are spending our resources wisely and being good custodians of the “peoples” funds,” he explained. “ I want to understand the recruitment of our teachers and retention of these teachers, why do we lose them, why do we retain them. How do we recruit the best teachers for our kids and keep them in our community?”

The Director A seat, along with Director B (currently held by Jay Rickstrew), Director C (currently held by Jacquelyn Johnson) and Director D (currently held by Brock Hedberg) seats will all be up for election in November 2019. The Director A seat will be a two-year term to fulfill Mrs. Parks’ term. Director B, C, and D will all be four-year terms.

Those interested in running for the school board must be a registered voter of the district for at least 12 consecutive months before the election. The candidate must live in the district that he or she runs to represent.

Residents interested in running for a board seat will be able to pick up nomination packets at the Garfield Re-2 District office on (and NOT before) August 7. The process does include the circulation of nomination petitions and all documents must be filed by August 30, 2019.
