Board Meeting Highlights – January 14 - Steve Beaulieu

This week, the Board of Education met at Rifle Middle School to recognize the good work happening there and across our district. Principal Rob Dean and his team shared highlights from the past year, including steady academic progress, a positive school culture, and strong connections with families and the community. Rifle Middle School earned a “green” School Performance Framework rating this year, reflecting improved student achievement, fewer discipline issues, and a continued focus on helping students grow both academically and socially. It was encouraging to see the results of that hard work.

The Board also received an informational update about workforce housing and how rising housing costs are affecting school districts across our region. District leaders shared results from an internal staff survey that looked at how housing costs are impacting employees and their schools. No decisions were made, but the conversation highlighted the importance of long-term planning and working with community partners as we look for ways to better support and retain our staff.

Next, the Technology Department shared an update on how Garfield Re-2 is approaching artificial intelligence in our schools. While AI is changing quickly and can feel overwhelming, the district is focused on using it responsibly as a learning tool—not a shortcut. Staff are putting guardrails in place to protect students, promote fairness, and help students build skills like critical thinking, problem-solving, and adaptability that they will need in the future.

The Board also reviewed the district’s annual financial audit. The independent auditors found that the district’s finances are well managed. At a time when school funding is tight across Colorado, it’s reassuring to know our district is being careful and transparent with taxpayer dollars.

As we move into the second half of the school year, the Board remains thankful for our dedicated staff, supportive families, and engaged community. Together, we continue working toward a shared goal: making sure every Garfield Re-2 student feels supported, challenged, and prepared for the future.
