Board Update - February 11, 2026 - Chance Jenkins

On Wednesday, February 11th, the board had the privilege to meet at Rifle High School. During the "Shine the Light" portion of the meeting, Principal Johnston shared with us some victories and ongoing challenges. Test scores continue to improve in certain areas. These should always be met with celebration. My focus has always been and will continue to be High Student Achievement for EVERY student. That's why we don't just celebrate our victories; we study the areas where we fall short. Make no mistake, this is a very important step in the process of getting better. We study, plan, and implement. Rifle High School continues to do this at a pace that I am extremely proud of.

Garfield Re-2 Shares Results of Workforce Housing Survey

RIFLE, CO — Garfield Re-2 School District Superintendent Kirk Banghart shared a summary of results from the district’s recent Workforce Housing Survey with the Board of Education during its January 14, 2026, regular meeting. The information was presented as part of ongoing discussions focused on staff recruitment, retention, and long-term workforce stability.

The anonymous survey was administered by Colorado housing consultant Kwame Spearman and received responses from 451 employees, representing approximately 47 percent of the district’s workforce. District leaders noted that this level of participation provides a strong snapshot of staff experiences across job roles, schools, and departments.

Board Update - Celebrating our Veterans

Tuesday, we pause as a school district and as a community to honor the men and women who have served in the United States Armed Forces. Their courage, sacrifice, and commitment to something greater than themselves have protected the freedoms and opportunities we hold dear. Veterans Day is not simply a date on the calendar—it is a reminder of the cost of freedom and the responsibility we all share to ensure their service is never forgotten.

Board Update - October 22, 2025 Board Meeting - Cassie Haskell

As the fall season is wrapping up in the holiday season is approaching, there is a lot going on!  Our October 22 board meeting began the evening with ‘Shine the Light,’ recognizing our incredible transportation department, who safely transport our students every single day across the district. Their commitment ensures that our kids get to school safely and on time, and we are grateful for their hard work.

District Accountability Committee (DAC) reported they reviewed the district’s Unified Improvement Plans (UIPs) during their meeting this past week and followed it up with a SWOT analysis.

Fall is upon us, and the students and teachers are in full swing with the first quarter coming to an end. This was evident in our first board meeting of October. We were welcomed by the wonderful team of Kathryn Senor Elementary, where we also had some amazing cookies made for us by the Special Needs students. It is always great to get into the schools and hear from the team and the students about what makes their school great. KSE is doing wonderful things to grow their academic achievement, and it was very evident to see their double-digit increase in math for 4th and 5th, and in ELA for 4th grade. I anticipate that with the plans in place and the implementation of the new CKLA curriculum, these scores will only get better. We also heard from their Student Council on what makes KSE a place where they can live their charter and are Happy, Loved, Safe and Respected.

The Garfield Re-2 School Board held its regular meeting this past week, and I want to share a few highlights from the evening with our families and community.

We started our meeting by celebrating the fantastic work of the Riverside Middle School! Principal Karen Satter has led her staff with excellence and true commitment to student growth. Riverside Middle School has been rated as a Performance School for the 3rd year in a row! Staff also presented a plan to provide additional support to students who are not YET meeting academic achievement standards. It’s encouraging to see such passion for education. Go Vikings!

The September 10, 2025, School Board meeting was held at Elk Creek Elementary. It’s always great to be in the buildings, hang out with the teachers and staff, and hear about all of the fantastic things that happen every day within our schools. Ryan Fideldy and his staff do a great job, and their focus on student achievement and student independence is truly commendable. One of the best parts of being out in the schools is that each kitchen staff provides food for the meeting. That is always a highlight. The Garfield Re-2 kitchen managers and cooks are so very talented.

Superintendent Kirk Banghart shared with the Board that Garfield Re-2 has once again achieved Accredited status on our Colorado District Performance Framework - the first time since 2019. This reflects the dedication of our teachers, staff, leaders, and students across all of our schools.  Superintendent Banghart reminded us that this honor comes from years of hard work across the district, and I would be remiss if I didn’t also include the leadership of our former Superintendent Heather Grumley and Assistant Superintendent Lisa Pierce. They laid the groundwork for this remarkable achievement to occur. Now our focus shifts to building on that momentum through the Unified Improvement Plan or UIP.

That’s a wrap on the 2024-2025 school year.  Time to take a deep breath, relax, and start planning for 2025-2026.  Oh, wait, we have been planning that for months.

I want to take a second to congratulate every student that is a part of Garfield Re-2.  Many of you set goals for yourself in academics, sports, and extracurricular activities, and you achieved those goals.  Some of us fell short, but hold your head up high, you have time to put in the work and make the change.

Change is just a part of life.  You had your favorite teacher this year, and in the new school year, it will be someone new.  You loved middle school, but now you are on to the big time:  high school.  There will be some changes in Garfield Re-2 next year for the adults, also.  We say goodbye to many and invite new ones into our organization.

At our May 14th Board of Education meeting, we got to engage with students, staff, and community members around several important issues that shape the daily experience of our schools and the long-term direction of our district.

Our Shine the Light presentation focused on Health Services. Sarah Bell is the department director, and she was joined by Kim Gardner.  Together, they presented information about daily activities that we typically don’t see.  Their responsibilities are enormous, and they take great care of our students and our staff.  We appreciate all of the Health Services staff in Garfield RE-2!

It seems like we were just coming back from winter break, and here we are nearing the end of the school year! With the end of the year comes celebration. We have our students celebrating Prom, spring athletics, and the final tests coming to an end. Please be careful, safe, and smart as we’re out celebrating so many wonderful events, students, and staff.

We’d also like to give a huge shout-out to our three Daniels Scholars, Jefferson (Jeff) Torres from Rifle High School, and Winter Keeney and Samantha Smythe from Coal Ridge High School.

Spring has finally sprung in Garfield Re-2, and I for one couldn’t be more excited about the future.

On April 9, we had the privilege of visiting Graham Mesa Elementary School.  Principal Sprenger, along with his team, reviewed the CMAS data with the board, and we discussed the challenges as well as the positives that the data provides. We will continue to focus on the growth of the student body and stick to the process that our teams have proven to be successful. Anytime you are dealing with a large number of data points, change does not come quickly. It is incremental over a period of time. We are excited about the improvements GME has implemented and are anxiously awaiting this year's round of CMAS testing.

At the recent school board meeting held at Elk Creek Elementary, we began with a special presentation, Shine the Light. Elk Creek Elementary honored a Community partner, Classified staff member, and ECE Certified teacher. The Community partner was the ECE PTAC; they were honored for their contributions to the school & community. The PTAC, which consists of 25 dedicated volunteers, has organized numerous successful events, including a spell-a-thon, winter formal, Dads & Donuts, and they are looking forward to hosting moms and muffins this spring. Their ongoing efforts have made a significant impact! Thank you, ECE PATC! The stellar classified staff member honored was Vania Rodriguez, who has unmatched outreach for every family at ECE. Finally, Emily Quinn was the recognized teacher who is courageous at moving kids while nurturing them every step of the way.

No one said this was going to be easy.  Serving on a school board is challenging, especially when tough decisions must be made in uncertain times. Balancing the needs of students, staff, and families while navigating complex and emotional issues requires careful thought and a commitment to doing what you believe is right for your community. At Garfield Re-2, we take this responsibility seriously, knowing that our decisions impact the future of our district and the people we serve.
