Garfield Re-2 Policies
During severe weather events, evaluation for school closure begins the evening prior and continues at about 4:00 a.m. with conversations between the Colorado Department of Transportation, Garfield County Road and Bridge, the Director of Transportation, the Facilities Director, the Director of Communication, the Superintendent, and an evaluation of current and future weather information.
In the event of a school closure or to observe a delayed start, the following resources will be used to let families know about the closure:
An auto message phone call, email, and text message will be sent to families as soon as possible. The practice is to make the call using the district approved auto-messaging system by about 5:30 a.m.
Second, radio and television stations will be contacted, including KMTS (FM station on 99.1 and 99.5 on the FM dial).
Television stations in both Grand Junction and Denver markets will be contacted to place the information in their school closure information, including KKCO, KJCT, and KREX in Grand Junction and 9News, 7New,s, and CBS 4 in Denver.
The Garfield Re-2 website (www.garfieldre2.net) and Facebook will be updated with this information.
Parent, family, staff, and media communications will begin as soon as a decision has been made regarding a delayed start or school cancellation, with every attempt to get information out before 5:30 a.m.
Other emergencies that threaten the safety, health, or welfare of students or staff members that will result in distance learning will be communicated to families as quickly as possible using the same communication channels listed above, including district approved auto-messaging, newspapers, and radio stations.
