Rules for Home School and/or Private School Students
A student from a home-based or private school program may participate in any class in the public school system. To participate, they must enroll their student through the currently accepted student enrollment procedures.
Home-schooled students may participate on an equal basis in any extracurricular or interscholastic activity offered by Garfield Re-2 Schools and not offered through the student’s nonpublic home-based educational program.
Home-schooled students enrolled in courses at middle schools must meet the eligibility standards of the middle school – that is, passing all classes at the middle school and at home in order to remain enrolled in district classes.
1. Students who have been in a home study program or a private school and wish to enroll in grades 9 through 12 for the purpose of obtaining credits toward meeting Garfield Re-2 graduation requirements are subject to the following:
a. Students must first submit their transcripts to the district office. To verify the accuracy of transcripts, students may be required to take the semester final examination for each course for which the student is seeking credit. The tests shall be administered by high school staff within a two-week period before the new semester starts on a test date established by the guidance department.
b. To qualify for graduation and issuance of a Garfield Re-2 diploma, students who have been in a home study program or a non-accredited private school must successfully complete two semesters with a minimum of 2.5 credits per semester their senior year in high school and meet all other graduation requirements.
2. Home school or private school students who wish to enroll part-time in high schools must do so a minimum of two weeks before the first school day of the semester and are expected to attend classes on the opening day of the semester.
3. Credits previously earned in an accredited public and/or private school(s) will be evaluated for acceptance based on official transcripts received from the accredited school and in accordance with district policy.
4. Home school or private school students enrolled as part-time or full-time in district classes may utilize established routes/stops on district transportation as long as space is available. No new routes/stops shall be created to meet the needs of home-schooled students.
5. At the end of each semester, a credit audit of each part-time home school or private school students student will take place; students must maintain progress or passing grades in three or more credits (six/year) to continue their part-time enrollment at high school for the following semester/year.
6. Home-school or private students may participate on an equal basis in any extracurricular or interscholastic activity offered by high schools and not offered through the student's nonpublic home-based educational program. Home schooled students enrolled in courses at high schools must meet the eligibility standards of the high school – that is, passing all classes at the high school and at home in order to remain enrolled in district classes.
7. High school administration reserves the right to deny home school or private school students admission if, in their opinion overcrowding of facilities or other undesirable conditions develop.
