Entrance Age Requirements

(Early Kindergarten Entrance)

Evaluation criteria for early entrance into kindergarten includes:

1. Social and emotional maturity.  Shyness-boldness; dependence-independence; self-esteem; development of social skills; motivation for learning.

2. Gross and fine motor coordination.  Eye-hand coordination; small muscle coordination; large muscle and motor coordination; left-right hand dominance.

3. Intellectual development.  Cognitive functioning; spatial reasoning; classificatory reasoning; attention span; visual memory; auditory memory.

4. General background information and school readiness.  General readiness skills; visual discrimination and recognition; auditory discrimination and recognition; language development; size and weight; parent interview.

Recommendations for kindergarten will be based on an overall estimate of the child’s ability to be successful in school with children who are, on average, six months to a year older.  

The evaluation will be conducted by qualified school personnel at the direction of the principal or designee.  The decision of the principal or designee will be final.

No early entrance evaluation will be conducted after the first day of school.

A profile of each child recommended for early entrance into kindergarten will be developed and presented to the kindergarten teacher.  The profile will identify areas of strength as well as weakness.
