(Student Ambassador Program)

Purpose:  The Board shall establish the Student Ambassador Program for the following purposes:

  1. To provide leadership opportunities for students in grades 6-12.
  2. To enable an elected group of student representatives to have opportunities to express opinions and provide input to the Board and to receive constructive feedback from the Board regarding policies and procedures.
  3. To act as a liaison between students, schools, and the Board.
  4. To serve as ambassadors on behalf of the district at specific functions as determined by the Board.
  5. To provide feedback from clubs and student organizations.
  6. To engage in dialogue with the superintendent, assistant superintendent, and the Board president regarding topics of mutual interest.

The Student Ambassador Program is not designed to discuss controversial issues or specific incidents at schools or to question the actions of school principals, teachers, or other staff.  The program’s intent is to provide an opportunity for student participation, engagement, ownership, recommendations, concerns, and leadership training on the total operation of the school district, Board of Education, individual schools, and those activities that most affect students and families.

Membership

Membership is voluntary.  There will be one student who has applied and been elected at the school they represent in grades 6-12.  One member of the group will be nominated and elected as an advisory member to the School Board and perform other duties as determined by the Board in the future.

All members will be elected to serve a one-year term.  If there is a vacancy, that position will be filled as soon as possible by the school and grade affected.  Members may serve longer than one year in the Student Ambassador Program but they must be re-elected by the student body.

Student Advisory Member

The Student Ambassador elected to serve as an advisory member by the membership of the organization will serve a one-year term.  In addition, he or she will:

  1. Be present at Board meetings whenever possible and practical.
  2. Attend conferences, workshops, and trainings.
  3. Provide comments to the Board regarding issues impacting students in the district.
  4. Give reports from the Student Ambassador activities.
  5. Serve in a leadership capacity within the district.

The Student Ambassador will not participate in Board executive sessions.  All expenses incurred by the Student Ambassador will be paid by the district.  Student Ambassador activities should not deter the student from his or her academic work or extra-curricular activities.
