File: JJIB-R 3

Number of Coaches per Sport/Activity

High School

Numbers-Based Criteria

The number of coaches for each sport/activity (as referenced on the extra pay schedule) will be based on the number of participants in that activity.  There will be one head coach for the sport /activity, and assistant coaches will be added at the following levels.

1 head coach for each sport/activity

1 assistant at 20 total participants total 2 coaches

1 assistant at 40 total participants total 3 coaches

1 assistant at 60 total participants total 4 coaches

1 assistant at 75 total participants total 5 coaches

1 assistant at 90 total participants total 6 coaches

1 assistant at 105 total participants total 7 coaches

Needs-based criteria

Due to the varied nature of some activities, safety concerns, and the conditions beyond the control of the coaching staff, there are some exceptions to the overall numbers-based guidelines.  These will be considered needs-based criteria and may be adjusted with the approval of the superintendent. Some standard adjustments include:

1. If sport/activity offers multiple levels of competition, there will be at least one assistant coach per level:  freshman(c-team), junior varsity and varsity, even if the numbers do not support the third coaching addition. If the sport/activity does not offer a level of competition any longer, the coaching position will be reduced or reassigned.

2. Cheerleading:  2 coaches to handle the many events and duties involved with a two-season activity. One Head Coach and One Assistant Coach.

3. Football:  2 coaches per level of competition:  freshman (c-team), JV, and varsity. There will only be one head coach over the program. All other coaches will be assistant coaches.

4. Wrestling:  One head coach and 1 assistant coach for the varsity level and 1 assistant coach for the junior varsity level minimum.

5. Baseball/Softball: One head coach and 1 assistant coach per division (C-Team, Junior Varsity and Varsity).

6. Climbing Club: 1 head coach, 1 assistant coach for 10 participants, 1 assistant coach will be added for each 10 additional participants.

7. Dance: 2 coaches to handle the many events and duties involved with a two-season activity. One Head Coach and One Assistant Coach.
