Weekly and Semester Eligibility Procedures

(High School)

Weekly check

At the beginning of each week, teachers will mark students who are failing classes.  A list of students who are failing one or more classes will be distributed to teachers early each week.  Coaches and sponsors of activities that involve competition will notify students of their failing grades.  A student who is failing two or more classes will be immediately ineligible for a period of one week upon publication of the ineligible list.

Students failing only one course have until 4 p.m. Friday to raise a grade to passing.  They may still compete that weekend.  Teachers will grade work over the weekend and then mark students who are failing at the beginning of the week.  Students who did not bring a grade up by 4 p.m. Friday and are listed on the subsequent week's list are ineligible for any competitive extracurricular activity for a period of one week.

Semester check

To maintain eligibility, students must pass classes that total at least 2.5 Carnegie units at the end of a semester and not fail any course.  A student who regains eligibility may compete on the day following the current semester or quarter.  A student who becomes ineligible may play on the last day of the semester but not on the day after the semester ends.  Under no circumstances may students who are ineligible but will regain eligibility and students who are eligible and will lose eligibility be eligible on the same day.

No make-up work shall be permitted after the close of a semester for the purpose of becoming eligible except in the case of a manifest hardship as determined by the principal.  Students in this situation would be given a like number of days to complete the make-up work as the number of days they were absent.  In such cases, CHSAA must be notified in writing by the school.

Summer school

Summer school or its equivalent credit accepted by the school toward graduation may be used to replace any Carnegie units or equivalent of credit failed if completed by the first day designated by CHSAA for an allowable contest in that sport.  Credits made up during summer school must be in the same curricular area and be accepted to meet graduation requirements of class(es) previously failed.
